When was the last time someone you loved working with sang your praises on LinkedIn… in a way that reflects the work you’re doing right now?
Last week?
Last month?
Last year?
Or… has it been a while?
If your work has evolved, your recommendations may no longer reflect it.
Consider this your gentle nudge, or perhaps a velvet-wrapped wake-up call.
Because your LinkedIn profile is not a static resume.
It is a living, breathing reputation builder.
Often, it’s the deciding factor between “interesting” and “I’m in.”
Recommendations are the proof that your work lands, lasts, and matters.
As I write this, my profile includes 37 recommendations.
Three of them new in 2026.
Not by accident. By intention.
If yours could use a refresh, here are 10 elegant ways to welcome new recommendations without awkwardness or chase energy:
1) Go first with generosity.
Write a thoughtful, specific recommendation for someone you admire.
No hinting. No expectation.
And watch what often happens next.
2) Ask after a value-rich conversation.
If a discovery call delivers real value—even if they don’t hire you—ask:
“Would you be open to sharing your experience as a LinkedIn recommendation?”
Gracious. Clean. Complete.

3) Capture the moment while it’s warm.
When a client says, “That changed everything,” that’s your cue.
Invite them to share that insight while it’s fresh.
4) Anchor your ask to milestones.
Completion. Renewal. Breakthrough.
Mark the moment with:
“Would you be open to capturing your experience so others can benefit?”
5) Make it easy to say yes.
Offer a few simple prompts:
- What was happening before we worked together?
- What shifted?
- What would you say to someone considering this work?
Clarity creates completion.
6) Reconnect with past clients.
You may be sitting on a goldmine of goodwill.
Reach out. Reflect. Invite.
Not to chase, but to curate your body of work.
7) Celebrate what you receive.
When a recommendation comes in, acknowledge it.
Graciously. Publicly (with permission).
Others will be inspired to follow.
8) Build it into your process.
End of engagement?
Make a recommendation request a standard step.
No drama. No delay.
9) Exchange excellence, not obligation.
Recommend peers because you mean it.
Not because you expect it.
Quality attracts quality.
10) Refresh what no longer reflects you.
If your last recommendation speaks to who you were…
it may be time to invite one that reflects who you’ve become.
Here’s the truth:
In a marketplace where trust is often in short supply, real words from real clients still carry extraordinary weight.
Unlike posts that disappear, recommendations endure.
Your work deserves to be witnessed.
Your results deserve to be remembered.
Your profile deserves to reflect the current brilliance of what you deliver.
Your next step (10 minutes, start to finish):
- Write one recommendation for someone you respect.
- Invite one recent client to share theirs.
That’s it.
Momentum begins there.
If it’s been a while since you updated your LinkedIn profile, now is a good time to do that, too.
If we are not yet connected on LinkedIn, send me a connection request with a personal note.
If you feel inspired to share a LinkedIn recommendation on my profile, this link makes it easy.
